As you may or may not be aware, Facebook has finally revealed its use of hashtags on the social networking site. This finally gives one billion active users the ability to see global conversations.
Conversations across the network are now searchable by typing in #insertyoursearchtermhere and then pressing ‘Enter’.
Alternatively users can click on the hashtags that have been added to comments, status updates and even pictures.
How can hashtags help you with business?
The main allure of hashtags is that they help make your content more discoverable. By putting a hashtag in front of a word you are essentially tagging that word to a global conversation.
This conversation is not limited to your fans; people all across the world can find and engage with these tagged conversations on Facebook.
By adding a hashtag to a word it makes the word a hyperlink, if a user clicks the hyperlink it will show them conversations across Facebook that include the same hashtag.
Hashtags work in the exact same way as they do on Twitter and other social media platforms; they are a fantastic way of breaking boundaries and make it much easier to gain more fans.
Hashtag tips
- To hashtag correctly you cannot use spaces between words – #thisisright #this is wrong
- Do not become a hashtag addict – overuse of hashtags can be annoying, childish and #unprofessional, so #keepitsimple
- Hashtags are not case sensitive
- Keep hashtags relevant, consider what users may be searching for
By utilising hashtags in your Facebook strategy you will not only increase visibility of your content across Facebook, but – if leveraged correctly – an increase in followers and more engagement could ensue. For any help with your social media marketing get in touch with Sam Fish on 0845 456 1022.
